Job Description

 

Reporting to the Director of Geoscience, the Senior Manager of Mining and Geoscience Data will join Kinross’ corporate exploration group in Toronto. The candidate is a leader in data management with over 15 years of mining industry experience; curating, building, maintaining, and managing databases and software applications to ensure data integrity and data readiness. The Senior Manager, Mining and Geoscience will mentor and collaborate with database administrators across all Kinross’ business units and will lead the mining and geoscience data strategy to guarantee a continuous pipeline of properly curated datasets to support exploration, technical analysis, eliminate database-related bottlenecks, and comply with industry standards for reporting and disclosure.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the mining and geoscience data management strategy across the company.
  • Provide technical leadership in data management to exploration groups and mining operations.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with database managers and administrators at different business units to ensure consistency in data management practices throughout the company.
  • Work with environmental and metallurgical professionals to provide data management solutions and integration of these critical datasets into the database systems.
  • Support ongoing mining project executions through technical advice and solutions to handle the rapid flow of datasets and guarantee data custody.
  • Devise GIS solutions for real-time field data collection for exploration and mine geology.
  • Create and maintain dashboard solutions for key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Conduct regular database audits across the company to ensure the databases are compliant with the regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with providers of data sources such as assaying laboratories, remote sensing companies, geophysical contractors, etc., to ensure that generated datasets are of the best quality and in appropriate format to be ingested into the database systems.
  • Communicate with providers of data management software and technologies to ensure best pricing and software licensing across the company.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time to remote exploration projects and mining operations.

 

Education and Experience

 

  • The Data Manager will have a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geoscience and proven data management experience in the mining industry for the past 10 to 15 years. A Ph.D. degree in the data management field will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of exploration and mining data generation procedures such as drilling, core logging, field mapping, sampling, and assaying.
  • Experience building and maintaining mining and geoscience databases.
  • Proficiency in acQuire, SQL, Power BI, and Python is required.
  • Experience with Geosoft DAP, Maxwell Geoscience DataShed, and similar software platforms is essential.
  • Experience with geospatial software such as ESRI (ArcGIS), Geosoft Target, and Leapfrog is required.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with experts and non-specialists.
  • Fluency in Spanish is an asset.
