Great Bear Project

 

In March 2022, Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and its flagship Great Bear project (GBR), located near Red Lake, Ontario.  The Great Bear property is a greenfield, large-scale deposit with the potential for significant open pit and underground operations. At the start of 2025, the project moved into the detailed engineering and major equipment procurement phase.

The GBR Senior Mine and Maintenance Coordinator will be responsible for leading and coordinating all items related to the mobile equipment, fleet technologies, OEM/vendor engagement, maintenance model development and helping to build the maintenance strategy for both the open pit and underground equipment fleet. The role will report to the Mine Technical Services Manager, Great Bear Project and be located in the Kinross Head Office in Toronto, with expected regular travel to site and to the mobile equipment vendors offices and dealer facilities. 

 

Purpose of Role

 

Senior Contracts Specialist, Major Projects will lead and execute the sourcing of multi-million dollar complex construction services and engineered equipment to support Great Bear Project activities, while ensuring that materials and services meet all scope and technical specifications, are delivered in a timely manner, and are managed according to budget. Senior Contracts Specialist, Major Projects will provide input into Great Bear procedures and practices and will follow these procedures and standard industry practices in all aspects of sourcing, procurement and contract administration.


This position may be based in Toronto, Red Lake, or performed remotely from elsewhere in Canada. Travel to Toronto and Red Lake will be required from time to time. 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Work closely with the Great Bear Project team, the site in Red Lake and corporate stakeholders in the Toronto office to ensure sourcing meets the project requirements and delivers the expected outcomes.
  • Conduct sourcing analysis, market survey and contractor pre-qualification, including research and qualification of prospective suppliers by evaluating products, services, and performance according to business requirements.
  • Periodically review requirements with key stakeholders, ensure planning and necessary approvals are in place for the procurement process.
  • Lead RFX (RFIs/RFBQs/RFPs), including preparing bidders lists, developing RFX documents, issuing RFX to the marking, leading communication with bidders and coordinating with Project Evaluation Team.
  • Perform commercial bid evaluation, develop award recommendation, present such recommendation to Project Management and make sure all necessary approvals are obtained.
  • Draft, negotiate and execute complex multi-million dollar Agreements, change orders and other contract documentation.
  • Oversee procurement processes performed by Engineering Consultants.
  • Put in place measures to manage compliance with contractual obligations and to proactively identify potential contract changes, deviations or claims.
  • Provide post-award commercial support in contract management, as required.
  • Generate and maintain procurement status reports and various other reports to support project’s planned and awarded commitments.
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with the highest ethical standards and Kinross’ policies and procedures and reinforce procurement policies and processes with the team.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the team and vendors.
  • Identify procurement related risks and mitigations and escalate issues that require management support.
  • Perform other duties to support sourcing activities as assigned and required.

 

Skills

 

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex contracts in a manner that protects company interest while maintaining collaborative vendor relationships.
  • Established understanding and contacts with vendors and contractors who service related markets in the mining industry
  • Able to organize, set priorities and manage time effectively across multiple task, with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills with ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner in a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure against competing priorities and timelines.
  • Proven, highly developed verbal and written communications skills.
  • Able to research and analyze information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Acts and maintains a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality in all aspects of work.

 

Education and Experience

 

  • University degree in supply chain, business or finance.
  • Minimum of 15+ years relevant work experience in procurement, preferably in larger capital projects in mining, Oil & Gas, or other asset intensive heavy industry.
  • Formal training, professional designation, or certification in related area an asset.
