Purpose of Role

 

To provide technical leadership in Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation engineering (E&I); to develop and implement corporate policies, standards and specifications related to E&I engineering. Contribute to the execution of the strategy for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy.  Participate in developing and executing the Company’s energy strategy. Ensure quality standards are upheld in the field of specialization. To participate in medium to long-term business and/or project planning on key projects by providing technical and cross-functional expertise.    

 

Job Responsibilities

 

 

  • Lead key technical projects requiring Electrical, Instrumentation and Control engineering input/oversight including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating, and minimizing risks, project management, managing resources and consultants.  Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Seek and implement opportunities to add value to the company’s project portfolio.
  • Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, data sheets) related to Electrical, Instrumentation and Control equipment and systems to assure they meet project objectives.
  • Oversee E&I discipline activities on major greenfield and brownfield capital projects, including the oversight of 3rd party consultants.
  • Lead project teams – establishing project plans and milestones, analyzing risks, developing budgets and delegating work assignments.  
  • Interface and coordinate with site operations teams.
  • Evaluate and monitor aspects of the company’s key energy supply contracts. Support strategic decisions and projects related to the company’s energy objectives.
  • Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement related to E&I procurement packages.
  • Take a coordination role in the construction and commissioning of E&I systems.  
  • Lead the process of preparing corporate documents (policies, standards, specifications) related to E&I engineering. 
  • Contribute to the execution of strategies related to E&I engineering to enhance current engineering team practices and performance.
  • Prepare business cases regarding projects and initiatives, analyze information, and prepare technical documents to support decision making; present recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing EPCM firms, Contractors, and Vendors for projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages.

 

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirementse

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional designation in Electrical Engineering either in Ontario (PEO) or with other Canadian jurisdictions.
  • 10+ years of related work experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, control, and Automation.
  • Good understanding of mining and processing equipment. Experience with sizing, selection, engineering, and installation of electrical, instrument control and automation systems in mining and processing plants.  
  • Design, specify, operation and maintenance of electrical equipment, e.g. HV / MV substation equipment, transformers, switchgears, MCCs, panelboards, etc.
  • Programming and troubleshooting experience with hardware and software of industrial process control and automation equipment, including sensors, discrete I/O, micro controllers, VFDs, PLCs, DCSs HMI, Historians and other control elements.
  • Basic programming or O&M Experience with protection relays and smart electronic overload / motor protection relays of leading OEMs, SCADA systems including Substation Automation Systems, Power, and Energy Management Systems.
  • Design, diagnose, and troubleshoot network infrastructures and protocols - Modbus TCP/IP Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, IEC61850, Profinet etc.
  • Experience in commissioning and troubleshooting of leading OEMs electrical, control equipment and control systems.
  • Experience in mine communications, Leaky Feeder, LTE, Advanced Process Control, Digitization (Digital/Virtual Twins), Robotics and AI will be an added asset. 
  • Experience in the design, installation, and commissioning of renewable energy projects Solar / Wind, Mine Electrification solutions including BEVs.
  • Ability to understand project business cases, assess alternative technical strategies, conduct cost-benefit tradeoffs, and recommend cost-effective solutions.
  • Experience with engineering management of medium sized projects.  This includes development and management of scope of work, schedules, budget as well as co-ordination.  Working with engineering consultants, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.  

 

 

Other Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Project management designations or operational experience is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams.
  • International experience is an asset.
  • Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, or French is an asset.
  • Good understanding of industrial standards - CEC, CSA, IEEE, IEC, ANSI/ISA, NFPA, UL and other international standards in the E&I field.
  • Software: MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint; and ETAP or other equivalent.
