Purpose of Role

 

 

Reporting to Director, Corporate Communications, the Manager, Communications provides expertise and supports the communications department in a broad range of activities including: communications planning and strategy; internal communications and planning and execution of employee communications strategy; website and social media; issues management; drafting of media releases and supporting documentation including issuing on the wire; communication activities in connection with quarterly earnings releases and other corporate announcements; speech writing; communications support of Sustainability initiatives; special event planning and coordination; and other duties as required. 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

1. Manages effective internal communications 

  • Manages employee communications/events as needed, including town halls, organizational announcements and updates from leadership 
  • Supports communication needs of company-wide programs and campaigns, business partner for internal clients  

 

2. Manages the implementation of effective communications strategies to disseminate company messages  

  • Manages reputation management and the media communications needs for the corporate office, and the regions, as needed 
  • Monitors media coverage in order to rapidly disseminate important news within company  
  • Manages the timing and execution of announcements and/or news to optimize media coverage  
  • Works with regions to develop strategic media plans and key messages, and manage communications issues 

 

3. Manages corporate communications in delivering statutory reporting requirements  

  • Supports the management and execution of the Annual Shareholder Meeting 
  • Manages the drafting and development of Annual Report 
  • Supports the quarterly reporting process including, but not limited to: background materials, media release, internal messaging, and media strategy  

 

4. Assists in strengthening Kinross brand 

  • Responsible for implementation and enhancement of company-wide brand standards 
  • Oversees the Kinross website, and maintains the website to reinforce brand as well as to keep content up-to-date 
  • Support social media strategy and implementation  

 

Education and Experience

 

  • University degree in related field of study 
  • 8+ related work experience or equivalent 
  • First-class writing skills 
  • Ability to create effective and realistic communication plans 
  • Direct experience in working with media 
  • Strong communications judgement in assessing audience communication needs, crafting appropriate messaging, choosing appropriate delivery channels, etc. 
  • Proven experience managing communication products/projects/events  
  • Thorough knowledge of web-based communications and familiarity with latest trends, new media etc. 
  • Understanding of employee communication needs and issues 
  • Experience in an industrial setting  
  • Ability to effectively manage projects, fulfill project objectives and consistently meet deadlines; effectively communicate with and manage suppliers  

 

Additional Skills and Qualifications

 

  • Previous experience in the mining industry is preferred 
  • Ability to learn quickly 
  • Experience with communications systems and practices is an asset 
  • Professional demeanor and willingness to be flexible in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, Portuguese and/or French is considered an asset.  
  • Basic working knowledge of graphics programs is an asset 
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team 
  • Previous experience working with CMS an asset
