Purpose of Role

 

To be the company-wide leader and advisor in capital planning, which represents a critical aspect of Kinross’ operations. Ensure continuous improvement in areas ranging from capital policy and corporate governance to compliance activities and reporting. Supports the execution of Kinross’ capital strategy, standards and initiatives and acts as a liaison between Corporate and the operating sites.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Lead contributor in the monthly and quarterly reporting process for the Company’s consolidated capital expenditures
  • Analyze monthly and quarterly reports on capital expenditures against budgets and forecasts, and reporting such analysis to cross functional areas. Supports capital reporting to members of the Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”)
  • Work closely with the Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis (“FP&A”) team to coordinate and manage the annual budgeting process for the Company’s global capital, including delivering capital budgets within the set timelines
  • Liaise with site capital asset leaders to understand and analyze capital issues and provide thoughtful solutions accordingly
  • Support and manages the coordination, organization, preparation/reviews being one of the lead contributors for the Company’s monthly Technical and Corporate Capital Committees, with the ability to offer thoughtful insights to the audience, which includes most members of the SLT, other Corporate functional leads, as well as Mine Site GMs, such that they can make effective decisions
  • Responsible for presenting the consolidated capital analysis to the CFO, SLT and other leaders at various periodic operations meetings
  • Manages the review of capital included in Strategic Business Plans through close collaboration with the Operations Strategy and FP&A teams
  • Manages the AFE system, including close collaboration with the IT Services team, to:
    • Ensure all users can effectively execute the capital budget process with minimal system interruption
    • Enhance its efficiency for all users through continuous improvements
  • Analyze and manages the Capital 4 Point Plan (“4PP”) site dashboards to monitor and assess site performance against capital goals and metrics outlined in the 4PP, including quarterly reviews with the Mine Site GMs 
  • Responsible for ensuring company-wide compliance with Kinross’ capital policies, including regular maintenance of the Delegation of Authority global policy and periodic review of the design of various site and functional procure-to-pay matrices in adherence with various Kinross policies
  • Provide technical expertise on capital planning and governance to corporate and site personnel, with such advice being actively sought for 
  • Facilitate relationship with external auditors in the area of capital management and related systems and policies 
  • Monitor classification of capital projects as sustaining (or non-sustaining) on a continuous basis, and using judgment, including collaborating and seeking advice internally, to address situations where such classifications are not clear 
  • Periodic review of project studies and/or related financial models to provide project teams with feedback over various capital and/or other financial/reporting considerations
  • Engage in Continuous Improvement initiatives in respect of Capital Management, including but not limited to enhancement of current systems and processes and implementation of new ones 
  • Develop team members on the capital planning cycle, including training on the AFE system 

Education and Experience

 

  • University degree in Finance, Business Management, Engineering, or a related field
  • 6-10 years of experience within the industry, with at least 2 years of experience in finance management role, including managing and/or collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals and/or project teams
  • Experience in planning and implementing systems, policies and procedures for large organizations
  • Previous experience in the mining or other capital intensive industries is preferable

  • Proficient influencing and negotiating skills so that contentious issues can be handled in a professional manner, with the ability to influence and persuade others to agree to your view  
  • Ability to think strategically when assessing capital requests, including identifying associated potential risks and governance requirements
  • Good level of knowledge of International financial reporting standards (“IFRS”)
  • Strong presentation skills to enable delivery of clear message to audience members that include amongst others, the SLT (COO, CTO, CFO, and periodically the CEO and others), and mine site GMs
  • Ability to develop and supervise others
