Great Bear Project

In March 2022 Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and its flagship Great Bear project (GBR), located near Red Lake, Ontario.  The Great Bear property is a greenfield, large-scale deposit with the potential for significant open pit and underground operations. In early 2025, the project moved into the detailed engineering and major equipment procurement phase. The Preliminary Economic Assessment released in September 2024 indicated a total initial project capital of $1.4B USD.

Job Description

Reporting to the VP & Project Director, the Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing the completion of the Advanced Exploration construction activities and for the preparation and execution of all construction activities for the Great Bear Main Project safely, on time, and on budget. The Project will be executed using an Owner’s Project Team model. The incumbent will work closely and effectively with all GBR departments, including Health and Safety, Environment, External Affairs, Project Controls, Engineering, and Operations, to ensure that the overall Project objectives are met.  It is expected that this position will directly manage a team of approximately 60 people, who will oversee approximately 40 - 50 construction contracts during the Main Project construction phase.  

This position is initially based out of Toronto, with periodic rotations to site. Full site rotations are expected to begin in Q2 2027.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee the completion of the AEX construction activities, providing input into the strategy for the remaining scope, and supporting the identification of opportunities, risks and mitigations
  • Provide construction input during detailed engineering, including attending model reviews and constructability reviews, and participating in technical assessments and trade-offs
  • Provide construction expertise during the Capex estimate update process, including input for the construction execution plan and master schedule, review of contractor estimates and associate estimate assumptions, and input during risks and contingency reviews
  • Lead the construction readiness effort in collaboration with the Project Team, including preparation of the Construction Execution Plan document, supporting procedures, and detailed construction planning
  • Finalize and maintain the construction schedule, in conjunction with the Project Planner, ensure engineering, procurement and contract plans meet site construction requirements
  • Provide visible leadership and set clear expectations on health and safety performance, environmental compliance, quality management and support of the Indigenous community and other external stakeholder commitments.
  • Ensure construction activities are executed in compliance with all relevant plans and procedures in alignment with applicable regulations
  • Proactively work with contractors to ensure project safety, quality, schedule and cost objectives are achieved and address any contractor clarifications and interface issues
  • Ensure the contractor's requests for information (RFIs) are responded to appropriately and on a timely basis
  • Review and approve QA/QC non conformance reports
  • Oversee the set-up and execution of all construction services, including contractor mobilization, the construction camp, site transportation, shared equipment pools, site maintenance and ensure that services meet all construction requirements.
  • Adhere to project change management protocols, and identify, manage and mitigate risks to schedule, cost and quality
  • Chair daily and weekly site meetings and submit progress reports as required
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationship with Kinross personnel, contractors, local and Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders 

Education and Experience

  • At least 20 years of experience in construction management on mining or heavy industrial projects including at least 10 years experience as a construction manager. Experience in construction in Ontario and/or cold weather climates is preferred.
    A demonstrated commitment to all aspects of safety and proven performance in achieving health, safety, environment, and community objectives. 
  • Diploma or degree in a related field is considered an asset
  • Extensive expertise in all aspects of project management practices and construction management and construction
  • Proven leadership, influence and communications skills
  • Knowledge of the mining industry and related legal requirements
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Ability to liaise effectively between various groups, and to deal with complex problems
  • Must be results-oriented and able to prioritize and focus on priorities with a demonstrated ability to execute plans and schedules on time and on budget
  • Ability to interact with all stakeholders with transparency, tact and diplomacy
  • Strong team building and people management skills, able to build a culture that promotes team satisfaction and retention
