The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.

As one of the largest private employers in Mauritania, Tasiast invests heavily in training and career development opportunities and has many important programs in place to support its host communities. For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.   

 

 

Job Description

 

Lead the execution of strategy for the mine planning and geotechnical engineering function and ensure alignment with the organization’s overall strategy. Ensure continued growth of the engineering team, to maximize operational efficiencies and profitability, and to cultivate exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and establish standards of mine planning and geotechnical engineering aligning with corporate standards
  • Lead execution of mine design and mine plan
  • Interface across departments and outside firms to ensure deliverables align with overall strategy and meet objectives
  • Provide technical support, advice and assistance to operations, technical services and project groups
  • Executes short and intermediate-term strategies that support the growth of the engineering team; ensures strategies are concretely linked to the organization’s overall strategy
  • Leads the execution of strategies in the mine planning and geotechnical engineering team to enhance current practices and performance
  • Develops systems and measures that appropriately assess the team’s performance and reviews progress to ensure achievement of targets
  • Manages the human, financial, and operational resources of the team
  • Formulates the annual operating and capital budgets for the team
  • Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone, and prioritizes business goals
  • Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages the overall performance of the function and direct reports
  • Builds the team capabilities to achieve financial and operating strategy; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent and actively develops key talent

 

Education and Experience

 

  • University degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in Mine or/and Geotechnical Engineering – required
  • Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise – preferred
  • Minimum of 8 years of related work experience in large scale open pit mining – required
  • Previous experience as supervisor of a technical team including mine planning or geotechnical team – required
  • Knowledge and experience in coordinating the engineering functions for study phases, basic and detailed engineering through site development and operations – required
  • Knowledge and experience in coordinating the different engineering functions at site, corporate and consulting level – required
  • Knowledge and experience in developing policies and procedures relating to safety, the environment and individual, and organizational development – required

 

Skills

 

  • Proficiency with Deswik or other industry standard mining software – preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently – required
