The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.

For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.   

 

 

Job Description

 

The purpose of a senior health and safety advisor is to ensure that the organization’s construction activities are conducted in a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers, and the public. A senior health and safety advisor plays a crucial role in developing and implementing health and safety policies, procedures, and programs that minimize risks and prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses in the workplace.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Acting as a coach and mentor to fellow safety advisors and front line supervision on all construction activities as well as business partners of the construction project. 
  • Conducting critical control verifications and risk assessments of the construction workplace to identify potential hazards and developing plans to address them.
  • Developing and implementing safety policies and procedures, ensuring they are in compliance with organizational, Business Unit and Local Regulations.
  • Conducting investigations of accidents and incidents to identify the root cause and develop recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
  • Providing guidance and support to employees and management on safety issues, including conducting safety meetings and presentations. 
  • Conducting regular safety inspections of the workplace to ensure that safety standards are being met.
  • Assist in conducting hazard assessments and risk evaluations to identify potential safety hazards and recommend appropriate controls.
  • Support and report on daily activities to ensure the Tasiast Construction manager is at all times aware of changing risks associated with the construction project. 
  • Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

 

 

  • NEBOSH/SAMTRAC or other relevant internationally recognized qualification in occupational health and safety management 
  • Excellent computing skills MS office e.g. word, excel and power point 
  • Minimum of 5 years of safety experience in construction of processing facilities and large scale bulk fluid storage tanks in the mining industry or adjacent
  • Fluency in English.

 

Desired Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Trade qualification (Electrician, Fitter, Boilermaker
  • Experience in constructing CIL tanks 
  • Qualified Scaffolding inspector
  • Qualified Rigger
  • Qualified incident investigation leader (TapRoot, ICAM, RCAM)
