Purpose of the Role
The Database & GIS Administrator plays a pivotal role in managing geological data and utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support exploration projects. This position is critical for ensuring efficient data management, analysis, and visualization, aiding in strategic decision-making for exploration efforts. The role also involves leading and managing the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) team and functions, ensuring data accuracy and reliability across exploration projects, while contributing to the development of processes and methodologies that drive growth within the Exploration Geology function. Reporting directly to the Exploration Project Geologist, this role requires a blend of geological expertise and advanced IT skills, particularly in database management and GIS technologies.
Key Areas of Responsibility and Duties
Includes but not limited to:
• Geological Data Management: Collect, organize, and maintain geological data from various sources, including field surveys, drilling results, and laboratory analyses. Manage comprehensive geological databases to ensure data integrity, accessibility, and secure storage.
• GIS Analysis and Mapping: Utilize GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for analyzing geological, geophysical, and geochemical data. Generate high-quality maps, spatial models, and visualizations to support exploration projects and inform decision-making.
• Data Integration: Integrate geological data with topographical, land tenure, and environmental information to provide a holistic view of exploration prospects.
• IT and Database Management: Design, manage, and maintain large-scale geological databases, ensuring optimal performance, data integrity, and security. Leverage database management systems (DBMS) such as SQL, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar technologies to optimize data storage, accessibility, and retrieval. Oversee the integration of database systems with other IT infrastructure, ensuring seamless data flow and system compatibility. Implement and manage data migration, data backup, and recovery processes to ensure continuous data availability.
• Software Management: Manage licenses and relationships with software and technical support services providers ensuring seamless operations of all exploration software.
• QA/QC Management: Lead and manage the QA/QC team, overseeing the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of QA/QC protocols for geological data. Ensure compliance with industry-standard QA/QC processes, including sampling, logging, data collection, and analysis. Regularly audit QA/QC procedures and outcomes, identifying and resolving data discrepancies to maintain high standards of accuracy and reliability.
• Team development: Provide training and mentorship to database users and team members, fostering a culture of excellence and attention to detail.
• Reporting and Documentation: Prepare technical reports and presentations that communicate geological findings, trends, and insights effectively. Collaborate with the exploration team to provide GIS and database management support for reports.
• Database Optimization: Continuously improve database structures and workflows to enhance data management efficiency. Implement data quality control measures to ensure accuracy and reliability, particularly in QA/QC programs.
• Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Monitor and enforce Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs to maintain data accuracy and reliability.
• Process Design and Development: Assist in designing and developing processes, practices, and methodologies to enhance the growth and effectiveness of the Exploration Geology function.
• Collaboration: Work closely with geologists, geophysicists, IT specialists, and other team members to support exploration objectives. Facilitate cross-functional communication by providing GIS and database insights to various teams.
Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements
Mandatory skills and requirements for this position:
• Bachelor's or higher degree in GIS, Database management or a related field.
• 2-5 years’ experience in geological database management and GIS analysis, preferably in the mining or exploration industry.
• Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ARCGIS, QGIS) and geological database management tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Interpersonal and mentoring skill is required. Well-developed technical report writing and presentation skills. Very strong communications skills. Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions
• Familiarity with geological and mining terminology and data sources. Knowledge of drilling techniques and ability to design efficiently a drilling program.
• Knowledge of spatial data analysis techniques.
• Database management skills, understanding of QA/QC protocols and procedures that meet industry standards.
• Ability to compile and interpret large database set, including geological, geochemistry and geophysical data.
• Proficiency with exploration 3D software. Ability to construct geological, structural model, based section and level plan interpretation.
• Advance proven knowledge of ACQUIRE and FUSION DATABASE or similar database software.
• GIS software knowledge: MICROMINE, LEAPFROG, MAPINFO / DISCOVER, ARC-GIS or similar.
• Notions and experience on reporting and evaluate QA/QC reports – analysis failures and assist the geologist on proper documentation for decision make process.
• Understanding of QA/QC protocols and procedures of sampling process that meet industry standards.
• Ability to understand and administrate large multiple geological, geochemistry and geophysics datasets.
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
• Ability to work cooperatively to find solutions to complex problems.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and French.
