The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.

As one of the largest private employers in Mauritania, Tasiast invests heavily in training and career development opportunities and has many important programs in place to support its host communities. For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.   

 

 

Job Description

 

The role of the Production Superintendent is to coordinates the Process Plant operations to achieve the production rates of gold whilst ensuring management of safety, health and environment exceeds expectations.

The key objective of this position is to maintain a safe working environment while meeting processing production targets in compliance with all standards and statutory requirements.

They will also ensure an integrated approach to mill management is achieved ensuring production requirements are matched to provide the best overall production outcome.

Operations

 

  • Ensure relevant safety, Mining and other statutory codes and regulations remain in full compliance.
  • Adhering to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Identifying and reporting any potential safety hazards or risks.
  • Managing multi-faceted production teams (Process and Engineering) to carry out activities at the CIL Process operations with a focus on optimizing the operations.
  • Provide Process Trainers/Advisors and the shift supervisors with leadership and support and be cognizant of cultural and educational differences when training, assessing and mentoring plant personnel.
  • Work with the Manager and Process Trainers/Advisors to assess training and development needs, performing gap analysis, designing and leading programs that will increase operational leadership skills and capabilities.
  • Lead site initiatives to improve the understanding of processing operations safety
  • Maintain the process operations operational cost budgets/forecasts, ensuring a culture of cost awareness is fostered within the department.
  • Operate the Tailing Storage Facilities in accordance with Mauritanian Mining Regulation and standards.
  • Ensure a system of continuous production improvement is implemented within the processing group delivering continual production and operating cost benefits.
  • Develop a culture of formally reporting all hazards, incidents and near-miss events that occur and conducting timely investigations when required and ensuring that all staff understand these are opportunities to learn, improve and make sure like incidents do not happen again.
  • Work with the Process Manager to support development of processing operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Plan, approve and monitor the operational expenditure.
  • Closely monitor the use of contractors to ensure that contractors are used in an optimal manner and only engaged when necessary...
  • Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards. Consistently maintain a high quality of work within the department and within the operations team.
  • Drive ICMC compliance by adhering to the international cyanide code practices, work closely with the internal cyanide code champions and group technical services team.
  • Provide input regarding improvement opportunities and drive a business improvement minded culture in the operational areas.

 

Scope

 

  • Provide direct management, mentoring and effective leadership to the site’s Process Operations team consisting, ensuring that team members receive training, support and resources to work effectively and safely.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Participate to the creation of a global budget for the mine and work within its framework in the Processing department.
  • Identify and study processing options and operating practices, to improve the performance of the department.
  • Hand over shift information.
     

Education and Experience

 

  • BSc. degree (or equivalent) in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or related field.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience with 5 years or more being at Superintendent or higher level in a large-scale open pit gold recovery operation with a proven track record of production results.
  • Experience in the management of a mill production team.
  • Extensive SAG/Ball Milling experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of carbon handling, solution chemistry, elution principles and practices, comminution, materials handling, pumping systems, smelting.
  • A related post-graduate qualification and/or relevant business qualification
     
  • Working knowledge in JDE will be an advantage.

  • Experience working within the mining sector in Africa.

  • Management of processing operations in Africa, preferably West Africa.
  • Well-developed communication skills (both oral and written), ability to problem- solve and to work effectively as part of a team and be able to coach and motivate others.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Knowledge of standards, methods, and procedures of the job.
