Tasiast Mine
The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.
As one of the largest private employers in Mauritania, Tasiast invests heavily in training and career development opportunities and has many important programs in place to support its host communities. For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.
Job Description
Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Mobile Maintenance department to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective performance of all mobile equipment. The role is accountable for delivering asset performance excellence, driving maintenance optimization initiatives, and ensuring alignment with Kinross’ operational and business strategy.
This position plays a pivotal role in achieving production targets, improving asset reliability, and developing a high-performing technical team culture based on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. The role also serves as a key partner to the Mining Department and a strategic collaborator across Operations to ensure equipment availability aligns with production priorities and site objectives.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the Mobile Maintenance team to achieve operational excellence, reliability, and availability targets across the mobile fleet (HME, auxiliary and light vehicles).
- Ensure strict adherence to Kinross’ Health, Safety, and Environmental standards; actively promote a culture of safety leadership and risk management.
- Develop and execute the department’s strategic plan, aligned with site business objectives and long-term asset management goals.
- Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs to optimize fleet performance and lifecycle cost.
- Manage annual operating and capital budgets, ensuring accurate forecasting, cost control, and financial accountability.
- Implement world-class maintenance systems, processes, and KPIs to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement.
- Partner closely with the Mining Department and other operational teams to coordinate priorities, minimize downtime, and maximize equipment utilization and productivity.
- Lead critical maintenance projects and major overhauls, ensuring quality, safety, and budget compliance.
- Design, implement, and oversee technician development programs to build technical competencies, strengthen maintenance capability, and ensure sustainable talent pipelines.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key business partners, including Operations, Supply Chain, OEM and Technical Services fostering collaboration and alignment toward common goals.
- Coach and develop the maintenance leadership team and workforce to build technical capabilities and ensure effective succession planning.
- Oversee contractor management and ensure service delivery meets Kinross’ safety, quality, and performance standards.
- Drive innovation and technology adoption to enhance equipment reliability, efficiency, and maintenance predictability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.
- More than 10 years of progressive experience in mobile equipment maintenance within the mining or heavy industrial sector.
- At least 5 years in a senior leadership role, managing large and diverse maintenance teams.
- Proven track record leading large maintenance teams in a gold or base-metal mining environment.
- Strong experience in asset management, reliability engineering, and maintenance planning systems (e.g., SAP, AMT, or similar).
- Demonstrated ability to manage large budgets and deliver measurable performance improvements.
- Advanced understanding of safety leadership, risk management, and operational excellence frameworks.
- Demonstrated success in implementing technician training and development programs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate across departments and levels.
- Experience managing contractors and OEM relationships.
- English fluency required; French or Arabic would be an asset.
