Tasiast Mine

 

The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.

As one of the largest private employers in Mauritania, Tasiast invests heavily in training and career development opportunities and has many important programs in place to support its host communities. For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.   

 

Purpose of Role

 

The Fixed Plant Reliability & Planning Superintendent is responsible for leading, coordinating, and optimizing the planning and reliability departments to support daily maintenance, shutdowns, and capital works in the process plant. This role focusses on the proactive planning of resources, materials, and work scopes to maximize plant reliability, availability, and cost efficiency while aligning with safety and production objectives. The superintendent will supervise a team of planners, and reliability personnel, and work closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, projects, supply chain and warehouse functions.

 

Job Responsibilities

Planning

  • Lead and manage the plant planning and scheduling team to deliver effective short, medium, and long-term maintenance and shutdown plans.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve planning processes, systems, and tools to support operational excellence.
  • Oversee the preparation of weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance schedules in alignment with production priorities and reliability targets.
  • Ensure shutdowns/turnarounds are effectively scoped, resourced, scheduled, and executed to meet safety, cost, and time objectives.
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance, reliability, and engineering teams to prioritize work requests, optimize resource allocation, and integrate production planning.
  • Drive forecasting of labor, equipment, and material requirements to ensure readiness.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs such as schedule compliance, backlog, wrench time, and maintenance costs.
  • Proactively lead the planning discipline and act as the key interface between operations and maintenance functions.
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement initiatives through accurate work history and data management.
  • Ensure all planning and scheduling activities comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Work closely with maintenance and supply chain departments to improve spares cataloging through corrective spares identification and status confirmations.  
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and development opportunities for planning and scheduling staff.
  • Integrate equipment criticality work streams with procurement and spares planning activities to ensure parts availability.
  • Develop budgets and forecasts for maintenance activities and track performance against targets.
  • Actively promote a strong safety culture and ensure planning incorporates risk management practices.

Reliability

  • Facilitate and chair safety toolbox and other safety meetings on an ad hoc basis.
  • Organize and manage Reliability projects from initial concept development to final commissioning and project close out.
  • Develop project budget and schedule forecasts, monitor project performance and implement corrective actions to ensure adherence to plan.
  • Streamline and apply improvement methodologies (Lean, 5S, Kaizen etc.) across the process site.
  • Develop reliability team through effective coaching, teaching, mentoring, practical applications while cultivating a positive learning and work environment.
  • Facilitate and lead team activities and rapid improvement events as required utilizing project methodologies.
  • Experience with Data-driven presentation and decision-making and continuous improvement frameworks.
  • Conduct observations and analyze data including downtime, cycle time analysis, etc. to bring recommendations for improvement opportunities to the team.
  • Track, communicate and share results and lessons learned – ensures successes are published and communicated to all employees.
  • Assist in interpreting facts and information gathered to understand current state and defined future states
  • Follow the Equipment Maintenance Strategy (EMS) optimization process.

  • Support Warehouse in standardizing parts and deleting unnecessary spares.
  • Support Warehouse in standardizing spares and developing equipment maintenance strategies.
  • Perform reliability analysis and design review of new equipment.
  • Provide commissioning support from a reliability and conformance perspective.
  • Review and analyse data relating to Work management KPl’s, equipment reliability KPI’s, maintenance cost KPI’s (report to management).
  • Accountable/Responsible for maintaining current and correct specifications, manuals, drawings for Fixed and Mobile assets (Documentation/ Shared Drive/ Library/SAP BOMs etc.)
  • Support the integrity of maintenance data for assigned area; Mobile and Fixed assets.
  • Support the CBM Technicians with condition monitoring tasks during Process Plant shutdowns.
  • Develop and support replacement planning for physical and digital assets.

 

People Leadership

  • Lead safety culture and best practices within the teams.
  • Accountable for team performance management, development and training plans, job descriptions and development opportunity networking.
  • Practice visible and active leadership across the Process teams.

Scope

  • Provide direct management, mentoring and effective leadership to the site’s Process Operations team consisting, ensuring that team members receive training, support and resources to work effectively and safely.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Participate to the creation of a global budget for the mine and work within its framework in the Processing department.
  • Identify and study processing options and operating practices, to improve the performance of the department.
  • Hand over shift information.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 8 – 12 years’ experience in maintenance, reliability, or operations, with minimum 5 years leading planning/reliability teams in a process plant environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mining & process plant equipment and systems (crushing, milling, CIL, elution process, thickening, tailings).
  • Proficient in CMMS/EAM systems (SAP) and planning tools (MS Project).
  • Solid understanding of reliability and maintenance best practices (RCM, PMO, predictive maintenance).
  • Demonstrated success in implementing predictive maintenance technologies (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing).
  • Solid understanding of asset lifecycle management and engineering economics.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Knowledge of shutdown/turnaround management methodologies. 
  • Experience in mining or heavy industry process plant.

  • Desirable languages: Arabic
  • PMP or Prince II is advantageous
