Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Description

To provide strategic Operational Health & Safety direction and hands-on support during the execution of Phase X (Round Mountain) UG project, including major construction, underground, drilling & exploration works. This role may extend into production.
Manages and supports a team of H&S practitioners (<10) and works closely with Global H&S, site H&S, site management and frontline supervision to enhance capabilities, cultivate a positive safety culture and to lead and support the development and implementation of H&S strategies, plans and initiatives. 
 

Key Responsibilities

Model company values and set the tone for a positive safety culture by supporting the implementation of the H&S Guiding Principles.
Lead the development of project H&S strategies, plans and programs, in alignment with company standards, to manage risks and continually improve performance on site.
Apply leadership, specialist skills and knowledge of H&S to support line managers to operationalize, implement H&S strategy, and evaluate outcomes with an emphasis on critical control management.
Advise site management team on governmental regulations that pertain to H&S and recommend necessary actions to obtain compliance.
Facilitate H&S risk management workshops, assessments, and reviews to ensure quality.
Maintain project H&S risk registers and action tracking processes, ensuring they are up to date and valid.
Provide input and leadership in the process of safety in design requirements during project FS study phase.
Ensure safety in design requirements are incorporated in the project.
Support wellness initiatives, and communication initiatives as needed - e.g., wellness initiatives roll-out.
Implement H&S communication processes to disseminate critical H&S information quickly and effectively.
Ensure fit for purpose medical facilities and emergency response resources are in place and maintained.
Contribute to the budgeting process related to health and safety.
Ensure all required H&S training and certification is in place, maintained and complies with local legal and company requirements.
Ensure ongoing training for H&S team members as well as to the wider site leadership and workforce.
Train Surface Safety Team members on aspect of UG Safety.
Facilitate and/or participate in Operational Learning Teams.
Provide H&S support in the development of H&S requirements for services and equipment in contract scopes of work.
Provide H&S input to the evaluation and selection of business partner (contractors).
Review business partner (contractor) H&S management systems and Project H&S plans to ensure compliance with company requirements.
Oversee the H&S performance of business partner (contractor) activities on site and work closely with business partner H&S managers to ensure compliance.
Develop systems and measures that appropriately assess H&S performance and reviews progress to ensure achievement of targets.
Develop risk-based site H&S assurance schedule and lead or participate in audits and inspections.
Provide input to project assurance plans, ensuring that appropriate H&S activities are included.
Lead or participate in incident investigations.
Conduct regular analysis of H&S data to identify trends and make recommendations for improvement.
Frequently report on H&S performance, ensuring reports are accurate and timely.
Ensure compliance with Round Mountain, MSHA, ATF, State, and Federal Standards.
As Round Mountain progresses to self-perform, the UG Safety Superintendent will be responsible for onsite training for new hires, MSHA 40 hour, and Mine Rescue Team members.
Ensure UG orientation of new employees, and all required documentation are completed accurately.  
Assist in the development and implementation of Permit to Work (PTW), Critical Risk Management (CRM), or Emergency Response Team (ERT) standards in addition to procedure and coordination of activities. This would include, but not limited to, incident response, training sessions, equipment purchases, team member recruiting, special functions, etc.
 

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety Engineering, Mining Engineering, or equivalent experience with increasing levels of responsibility in an Underground environment
Professional safety designation preferred (CRSP, MSP, CME, ASP or equivalent)
Previous experience on major project as H&S manager with over 10 years related work experience.
Experienced in planning, developing, organizing, and executing a wide range of H&S programs with a proven record of accomplishment of delivery.
Prior Kinross operational experience considered an asset.
English or French language preferred.
Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
Previous UG workplace experience in the US or Canada and familiarity with the jurisdictional ministry of mines acts would be considered an asset
