Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Mine planning: Performs pit optimization, prepares ultimate pit and pit phase designs, and develops related mine schedules, to support Life-of-Mine/Forecast plans and strategic analysis/growth projects.
  2. Economic analysis: Evaluates economic performance of engineering projects, mine plans, growth projects, equipment replacement analyses and various other initiatives.
  3. Best practice implementation: Optimizes and documents mine plan workflows, engages with/develops technical best-practice documents/SOP’s to ensure safe field execution of mine plans.
  4. Project management: Manages scope development, bidding and contracting, and performs contractor management for engineering projects.
  5. Engineering analysis: Performs engineering analysis to optimize mine operations, including supporting drill & blast design, identifying opportunities to improve load & haul efficiency, performing NSR/cut-off grade calculations, and improving production.
  6. Provides professional mentorship to junior engineers and strategic guidance to mid and short-term planning, drill & blast planning, day-to-day mine operations and plan reconciliation/KPI’s.
  7. Prepares all information required for Corporate Technical Services regarding Life-of-Mine/Forecast mine plans.
  8. Works closely with the Geology department in preparing year-end Reserves and Resource estimates and provides proper documentation for corporate/external review of these estimates.


 

Education and Experience

1.    Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or a closely-related discipline from an accredited university.
2.    A minimum of five to eight years of experience in mine engineering at an open pit mine. 
3.    Excellent mine planning skills with the ability to independently generate and optimize plans and schedules.
4.    Expert-level proficiency with mine planning software, Deswik and/or Minesight are preferrable. 
5.    Experienced in economic evaluation and sensitivity analysis of projects and plans, including cash flow/NPV models.
6.    Ability to effectively communicate/present information to a wide range of personnel including operations crews,  professional peers and Senior Leadership.
7.    Ability to effectively collaborate with Mine Operations to ensure successful mine plan execution in the field.
8.    Excellent problem-solving, communication (written and oral), and leadership skills are required. 
9.    Registration (or desire to register) as a Professional Mining Engineer in Nevada is preferred.
