Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Develop and implement geotechnical design criteria to support safe and optimal mine operations.
2.    Plan and manage the installation of the mine-wide geotechnical monitoring systems.
3.    Make recommendations on ground control procedures to guarantee safe operation and to optimize ore deposit recovery.
4.    Perform scenario analysis and back analysis using geotechnical software.
5.    Proactively perform site inspections, prepare operational mitigation plans, and manage geotechnical issues.
6.    Manage consultant work to guarantee quality deliverables.  
7.    Coordinate with Mine Design, Planning, Drill and Blast, and Dewatering team members to achieve stable highwalls. 
8.    Maintain and update the Ground Control Management plan.
9.    Plan the collection, analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data.
10.    Effectively communicate anticipated geotechnical outcomes.
11.    Provide comprehensive and timely contributions to the daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports.
12.    Coordinate with auditors and consultants to constantly improve the geotechnical practices on site.
13.    Contribute the overall safety performance of the site including facilitating Critical Risk Management, Job Safety Analysis’ and Incident Analysis’.
14.    Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians in all aspects of geotechnical engineering.
15.    Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
16.    Punctuality and regular attendance required. Some weekend on-call duties (rotating schedule shared with other team members).
17.    Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience

1.    Candidates should have a minimum of 8 years of mining experience as Geotechnical Engineer in open pit metal mining. Preference will be given to those with past experience overseeing heap leach and tailings stability as well.
2.    Practical experience with advanced geotechnical monitoring instruments and techniques.
3.    Understanding of rock mass strength, structural characterization and slope stability controls. 
4.    Capable of identifying and proactively predicting high wall failure mechanisms. 
5.    A high level of computer literacy with specialized mining and geotechnical software such as Vulcan or Hexagon and the Rocscience suite is needed.
6.    Capable of modeling scenarios and performing back analysis using tools such as SLIDE2, RocFall, Dips, SWedge.
7.    Familiarity with 3D geotechnical modeling techniques and their strengths and limitations. Experience in 3D modeling is preferred.
8.    Familiarity with wall control blasting best practices.
9.    Strong understanding of hydrology and dewatering operations is preferred.
10.    A post graduate Degree in Engineering or Geology is preferred.
11.    Effective written and oral communication skills.
12.    Effective decision making and problem solving skills.
13.    Must have the ability to plan, coordinate and schedule time to achieve overall objectives.
14.    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to delegate.
15.    Must possess a valid driver’s license.
