Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description
The Operations Manager is accountable for the safe, responsible, and effective management of the site operations and maintenance teams. This position will lead the surface mining, process operations and maintenance teams and be responsible for the delivery of the organization's overall goals. This position will be required to conduct all activities in a manner that reflects Kinross values and principles.
Essential Functions
1. Oversees the sites surface and processing operations and maintenance teams while ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with regulations.
2. Monitors production rates, implements process improvements, and collaborate with the team to overcome obstacles for continuous improvement.
3. Develops and executes strategies that support growth and enhances operational performance to ensures Kinross meets its objectives.
4. Oversees all mining related production activities including human, financial, and operational resources.
5. Leads and manages a senior leadership team responsible for executing the mine operation strategy.
6. Set and manages clear production performance targets, along with holding the team accountable to the set target.
7. Ensure that maintenance, planning, and scheduling are fully coordinated to achieve targets, and improve the overall reliability of the mine site operations.
8. Identify and drive continuous improvement actions across all facets of the business in accordance with management operating philosophies.
9. Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the
cultural tone and prioritizes business goals.
10. Ensures the implementation of processes, policies, systems, and practices within the operation that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage.
11. Ensure that the team members remain challenged and continuously grow and improve performance. Including identifying and developing high potential talent and/or successors.
12. Interact frequently and effectively with employees at all levels of the organization through engagement at line out meetings, inspections, reviews, meetings and department visits.
13. Identify risks, potential solutions, set priorities and allocate resources as appropriate.
14. Responsible for reviewing plans, operating budgets, and cost studies for mine expansion, mine equipment selection, and major supply contract awards.
15. Represent the site and company, in the communities, in which we operate in accordance with Kinross ethics and values.
16. Utilizes effective communication and leadership skills to foster a productive work environment.
17. Fosters a team environment dedicating to the team’s success.
Education and Experience
1. University degree in chemical engineering, mining/geological engineering or similar technical degree required.
2. Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise preferred.
3. More than 12 years of related work experience, with experience in leading teams within the mining industry preferred.
4. Detailed knowledge of all phases of mining and processing, along with the integration of the mining, milling/processing, and maintenance functions.
5. Knowledge and experience in developing policies and procedures relating to safety, the operation, and individual and organizational development.
6. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
7. Excellent organizational, time management and office management skills
8. Proven success and demonstrated history of leading a strong culture of safety.
9. The ability to establish, communicate and measure results regarding safety, productivity, continuous improvement, and business strategy.
10. Demonstrated ability to build and develop a dedicated team and positive working relationships with a diverse workforce.
11. Excellent people skills (coaching & mentoring) directed towards developing and empowering teams and individuals.
12. Ability to prepare and present reports to all levels of the organization in an accurate and fit-for-purpose format.
13. Proven success in implementing and managing change processes.
14. Sound business judgment and knowledge of financial and accounting functions together with a solid understanding of what drives profitability, cash flow and costs
