Job Description

The responsibility of the Metallurgical Technician is to perform routine and project-driven test work in a safe and efficient manner. This position reports to the Chief Metallurgist. The candidate must possess good communication skills, be self-motivated, and well organized while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Equipment operations – The Metallurgical Technician must be proficient in the safe use of all laboratory equipment including but not limited to; crushers, various screening devices, sample splitters, pH meters, weigh scales, carbon testing apparatus, rolling table, drying ovens, etc.
2.    Test Work – The Metallurgical Technician will collect routine solution samples on the Leach Pads and do routine tests on carbon and on mill and leach ore In addition, test work will be required for various projects to improve or maintain the efficiency of ore processing operations.  Example of such tests will include but are not limited to: Bottle Roll Leach Tests, Column Leach Tests, Shaking Table Concentration Tests, Flotation Concentration Tests, generating Particle Size Distributions.
3.    Paperwork/Reports – The Metallurgical Technician will complete all test log sheets and daily inspection forms in an accurate and legible manner.  Reports will be written in the standard format, as outlined by Kinross. The Metallurgical Technician will be responsible for organizing and maintaining the Metallurgical Lab files.  
4.    Training – The Metallurgical Technician will receive training by the Met Lab Trainer/Lead in accordance with the step progressions. In addition, may train other technicians, temporary and summer interns to perform laboratory tests, operate equipment, and be proficient in outlined tasks, as required.
5.    Safety/Environmental – The Metallurgical Technician will maintain an inventory of all chemicals in the Met. Lab and ensure their proper labeling.  Must be familiar with safety and environmental policies and their attendant paperwork.  Responsible to perform daily Workplace Inspections.  Handling of cyanide and cyanide solutions is required.  The necessary PPE will be provided and required.
6.    Individuals will be responsible to follow and complete assignments given to them by their supervisor. Must be capable of independent thinking and making conscientious decisions when direct supervision is not available.

Education and Experience

1.    Must ensure the safe and efficient completion of test work and report results in a timely manner.
2.    Maintain cleanliness and order in the Met. Lab.
3.    Cooperate fully with all fellow employees so that a harmonious working environment is maintained at all times.
4.    Computer Skills – must be knowledgeable in the use of word-processing, spreadsheet, and database programs: Word, Excel, and Access are preferred. 
5.    Must be able to communicate proficiently through e-mail, generate pick tickets and work orders on the JDE System.
6.    Troubleshooting – ability to perform maintenance and troubleshooting on basic laboratory equipment preferred.
7.    High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
8.    Must be willing to advance to increased levels of responsibility within the department. 
9.    Must be and keep refreshed on chemical hazards involved with working with the types of reagents used within the Ore Processing Department.
10.    Requires valid driver’s license.
