Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description
The Mechanical Engineering Intern will join the Process Maintenance team at the Round Mountain Mine to support reliability and performance improvement initiatives across the mineral processing plant. This internship offers hands-on experience in equipment reliability, defect elimination, and data-driven maintenance optimization. The intern will analyze downtime and wear trends, identify improvement opportunities, and help develop practical solutions to reduce plant downtime and extend equipment life. Project goals will be identified early based on the intern’s skills and interests, and will culminate in a final presentation of findings and recommendations to site leadership.
Job Responsibilities
• Support reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) activities through data collection, analysis, and field observations.
• Analyze plant downtime data to identify recurring failures and opportunities for mechanical reliability improvement.
• Assist with root cause analysis (RCA) and defect elimination projects.
• Evaluate equipment wear rates and assist in developing recommendations for material or design improvements.
• Partner with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to implement reliability improvements and monitor results.
• Develop and present a final project summarizing findings, recommendations, and measurable results.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
• Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
Education and Experience
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum of two years of coursework completed by the start of the internship.
• Interest in mechanical systems, rotating equipment, and maintenance reliability in a heavy industrial environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and data analysis tools; familiarity with Power BI or similar visualization software is an asset.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate across departments.
• Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and eagerness to learn through hands-on experience.
• Ability to work both in field environments and in an office setting.
• Must be 18 years or older and legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Valid driver’s license required.
Reporting Relationships
- Works under the direct supervision of the Process Maintenance General Supervisor.
