Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description
Under the direction of the Chief Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for mine Geotechnical and/or geological duties, in both an open pit and underground mining environment, as required. While also continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.
Job Responsibilities
1. Implement best practices in geotechnical engineering, assist with mine designs, dewatering, and mining operations to ensure safety and achieve business objectives.
2. Carry out geotechnical/geological inspections, mapping, and documentation. Supervise and work with drilling and geotechnical instrumentation installations.
3. Collect, process, analyze and model geotechnical/geological characteristics of the various rock mass for support of the surface and underground mine.
4. Process, analyze, and model data to understand the rock mass and its response to mining for purposes of excavation stability, mine design optimization, mine performance, and design compliance.
5. Geotechnical and geological database management.
6. Conduct geotechnical/geologic mapping, sampling, monitoring, and reporting to support site needs and corporate obligations.
7. Assist in the preparation of the daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly monitoring reports.
8. Responsible for implementing and enforcing the requirements of the Ground Control Management Plan.
9. Ability to be on call during off hours during your work rotation.
10. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.

Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in geological engineering, geology, mining or civil engineering is required.
2. Mining experience which includes familiarity with geotechnical design and rock mass characterization.
3. Working knowledge of a mining-based software preferable (Deswik, Vulcan, MineSight, etc...) as well as geotechnical software, Rocscience software desirable.
4. General understanding of mining operations, ability to be a team player, with interest in a dynamic open pit and underground mining environment.
5. Working knowledge and skill with computers utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. AutoCAD software knowledge is advantageous but not required.
6. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management, employees, contractors, and consultants.
7. Ability to work independently and also as a member of the Technical Services team.
8. Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational, and technical writing skills.
9. Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
10. Requires valid driver’s license.
