Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Mill and Ore Processing Manager, the incumbent undertakes assorted fundamental research and development projects with an end objective of improving crusher, heap-leach and ADR plant operating and maintenance efficiency. The leach pads at Round Mountain contain upwards of one billion tons of rock, and optimization of their recovery is crucial. The incumbent will introduce sound metallurgical practice to all process changes and recovery improvements. Incumbent will have direct oversight over the Metallurgy services and Analytical Services departments.  He/she will conduct all required personnel reviews, safety meetings, safety inspections, and task observations while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. 

Job Responsibilities

1.    Monitor and develop production reports to identify metallurgical deviations.  Design and supervise plant sampling surveys to address deviations, including proper sampling as required of the unit operation being studied.  Analyze the data extracted and make recommendations for change based on interpretation of the results using sound engineering principles.
2.    Design and carry out laboratory process simulation tests using bench-scale grinding, flotation, leaching, and other related processes.  Scale-up from bench-scale results.  Design plant tests and organize and run these plant tests.  Report on results of all tests.
3.    Metallurgical accounting and control of carbon inventories.
4.    Maintain current knowledge of industry practice and innovation and technological change.
5.    Provide strategic leadership, professional development, performance management and succession planning for the Metallurgical and Analytical Services departments.
6.    Provide input into the Processing Departments budget.
7.    Evaluate strategic processing needs and develop capital justifications for budgeting purposes.
8.    Will write up procedures and SOP’s for routine sampling and testing conducted in the process.
9.    Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
10.    Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct. 
11.    Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
12.    Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
13.    Works without risk or harm to self and others. 
14.    Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by state agency, or must be able to pass driver competency course and exam.
15.    Punctuality and regular attendance required.
16.    Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
 

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

1.    Accuracy and precise work is required.
2.    Ensure that sound engineering practice and principles are used.
3.    Requires an understanding of computer modeling.
4.    A Bachelor’s Degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering is required.
5.     10 + years’ experience required, including operating plant experience.
6.    Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills. 
7.    General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations.
8.    Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. 
9.    Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
10.    Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team. 
11.    Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
12.    Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis. 
13.    Requires valid driver’s license.
