Job Summary

Reporting to the AEX Underground Manager, the Underground Mine Superintendent will be responsible for the safe and effective execution of underground development activities for the AEX project. The role provides direct operational leadership for underground construction and development, coordinating contractor activities, ensuring alignment with the mine plan, and maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Working in close collaboration with Engineering, Geology, Construction, and Site Services teams, the Superintendent ensures that underground development progresses safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the broader project schedule.

 

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide day to day operational oversight of underground contractors executing development, construction, and installation activities.
  • Ensure contractor performance aligns with safety, schedule, and cost expectations.
  • Ensure effective handover between rotating Superintendents – maintaining continuity of operational priorities, risks, and safety focus.
  • Ensure short and long term mine plans are being met.
  • Work closely with mine engineering and planning teams to ensure development plans are practical, executable, and aligned with field conditions.
  • Coordinate daily planning and execution activities with contractor supervisors and Kinross technical teams.
  • Coordinate installation of underground infrastructure including ventilation, pumping, electrical distribution, and services.
  • Oversee daily underground activities (development, production, ground support, ventilation).
  • Coordinate drilling and blasting activities.
  • Provide strategic and active direction for underground operations.
  • Provide leadership and direction to underground supervisors and frontline crews to ensure safe and efficient execution of development activities.

  • Support development sequencing of twin declines and associated underground infrastructure to maintain multiple working faces and schedule efficiency.
  • Provide regular operational reporting on development progress, risks, and mitigation actions.
  • Provide technical and operating support to various operations.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and facilitate the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Assist with assessments to ensure that production plans, ventilation, ground, and geological controls are in place.
  • Identify operational risks related to ground conditions, water management, ventilation, and development sequencing and implement mitigation strategies.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

A diploma or degree in Mining Engineering, Mining Technology, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent operational experience in underground mining leadership roles will also be considered. Minimum 8-10 years of experience in underground mining, including supervisory or operational leadership roles.

  • Solid understanding of surface/underground mining and mining process, and related training requirements.
  • Supervisory Common Core for Underground Hard Rock Mining is considered an asset.
  • Knowledgeable in Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants.
  • Extensive knowledge and relevant work experience in underground mining.
  • Capable of learning and adapting to new equipment and software.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and engineering drawings.

Work Conditions

This position is based in Red Lake, Ontario. In this role you will work a 14X14 rotation. 

 

Compensation and Total Rewards

The base salary range for the Underground Mine Superintendent is $150,000 to $170,000 + Short Term Incentive Bonus, + Group Benefit Coverage. 

The hiring range reflects our targerted compensation framework for the role. The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate's experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.
