The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.

This role will be primarily focused on supporting the Great Bear project which is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. Job Description

 

 

The Design Technician will assist the Kinross technical team to manage and control the engineering firms that will be assigned to develop the detailed engineering for the Great Bear Project. This person will be working on general project layouts to provide concepts to the engineering firms for them to develop the detailed design. Ideally, this person has basic knowledge in various disciplines, such as civil, structural, mechanical and piping as well as processing plant flowsheets and P&IDs in order to modify them under the Kinross engineering manager’s supervision. Finally, the Design Technician will assist the GBR team in preparing presentation and reports for the project. The candidate must be proficient in design software with excellent interpersonal skills, strong written communication, and oral presentation skills. 
 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: 
  • Prepare conceptual designs and drawings for the Great Bear Project. 
  • Review CAD drawings from consultants. 
  • Ensure consultants follow Kinross’ established standards and guidelines. 
  • Involvement in coordination of the consultant’s drawing filing into Kinross’ system. 
  • Consolidate 2D drawings from multiple sources.  Experience with consolidating 3D models is an asset. (ideally can do the same with 3D models but not a necessity). 
  • Interpret technical drawings. 
  • Employ project management techniques to manage assigned projects from concept through to implementation. 
  • Understand and support in the development of company design standards and procedures. 
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

 

Education and Experience

 

  • Diploma in mechanical or civil engineering technician/technology.  Candidates with significant experience will also be considered. 
  • 5-10 years’ experience as a technician/drafter in the mineral processing and/or heavy industrial environment. 
  • Working knowledge in AutoDesk, Plant 3D, Civil 3D, Navisworks and/or Bentley MicroStation. 
  • Strength in mechanical, civil and/or structural engineering drafting for site layouts, mechanical equipment layouts and piping design. 
  • Basic knowledge of plant process flowsheets and P&IDs. 
  • Detail oriented with the ability to read construction drawings (civil, architectural, structural, mechanical). 
  • Able to perform in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. 
  • Organizational skills with respect to document control systems for drawings and projects. 
  • Computer literacy in a Windows 10 environment, using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). 
  • Canadian project experience; project experience in Ontario seen as an asset. 
  • Operational experience is an asset.
