Job Summary

Supervise and instruct the Technical Services Departments for Kinross Alaska operations in an efficient manner consistent with health, safety, and environmental standards to achieve production and operating cost goals. Plan, direct and coordinate capital projects, ensuring they are completed within budget and on schedule.

Essential Functions

  • Initiate and justify capital expenditures, approve special order non-stock direct purchases and new stock items, and approve direct payments.
  • Perform personnel administrative functions, approve employment of exempt and nonexempt personnel, approve salary actions of exempt and nonexempt personnel, participate in the corrective action process, and develop skills of subordinates to attain maximum staff flexibility and promotion to management.    
  • Advise and cooperate with all affected by changes in mine operations and assist in overall mine management through interaction with other departments.    
  • Develop the annual capital and operations budget across Kinross Alaska.
  • Manage any construction contractors, construction projects and conduct regular inspections to ensure Regulatory Compliance.
  • Establish safety standards with assistance from the Health and Safety Department.  Visit working areas to ascertain that operation policies and directives are put into practice consistent with safe operating procedures.    
  • Lead Technical Services Department and Capital Projects in a manner that would promote achieving safety and production goals.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, safety, confidentiality and environmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed.    
  • Review documentation of accidents, injuries, and equipment damage and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.            
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in mine engineering.
  • Seven to ten years of experience as a general mine foreman or a chief engineer.
  • Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations.
  • General knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions.
  • Working knowledge and skill with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Experiences in managing personnel in varying and unrelated fields; has demonstrated strong supervisory, administrative, organizational, and economic skills.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, with others in a team environment, and also as a member of the management team.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • May work holidays, weekends, and shift work as required.
