Job Description
A Mine Exploration Geologist will be responsible for leading the projects related to mineral resource definition drilling. The Mine Exploration Geologist will contribute to the implementation of the strategy for the geology team; to ensure alignment with the organization’s long-term strategy and to ensure service and / or operating standards are met. The Mine Exploration geologist will assist with planning and will manage execution of all stages of resource definition drill programs within Fort Knox and Gil pits. This will include preparation of RFPs, coordination with Mine Planning and Mine operations teams to ensure the drill pad preparedness and availability, and supervision of drilling contractors to ensure they maintain a high level of performance. The Mine Exploration Geologist will ensure that drill core is delivered to core shack in a timely manner. The Mine Exploration Geologist will be required to utilize database management and geological information systems such as acQuire database and Leapfrog Geo. The Mine Exploration Geologist will be expected to track the ongoing costs and ensure that the drill programs are carried out on budget.
Job Responsibilities
1. Assist with planning and manage all aspects of Mine Exploration drill programs
2. Oversees activities related to a system, program or process in geology operations
3. Prepare RFPs for drilling contractors and review submissions
4. Assist purchasing team in preparing drill contracts
5. Review drill targets, communicate with the Mine Planning team to determine best pad locations
6. Monitors costs related to geology and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
7. Investigates, researches and analyzes information and issues related to geology
8. Supervise drilling contractors
9. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience
10. Utilize Leapfrog software to analyze results
11. Punctuality and regular attendance are required
12. Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management
13. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies
14. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state
15. Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them
16. Work without significant risk of harm to self and others
17. Perform other duties as required
Education and Experience
Education
- Bachelor of Science in geology or equivalent required
Experience
- 5-8 Years of experience in mining or exploration geology is preferred
Skills
- Solid experience with diamond and RC drill management
- Good working knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs. Experience with Leapfrog Geo and acQuire database software desired
- Possess and understanding of sampling theory and assay techniques
- Have a strong commitment to safe working practices
- Ability to work independently and also as a member of the team
- Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment
- Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets
- May work holidays, shift work, or weekends as required
