Job Summary

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the NDT program within the Mill Maintenance Department, with a focus on optimizing equipment reliability and availability through advanced troubleshooting and condition monitoring techniques. The role requires a proactive approach to learning and professional development, including participation in additional training as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for establishing techniques and interpreting codes, standards, and specifications to designate to particular NDT techniques used, preparing or approving procedures and instructions
  • Apply structural ultrasound (UE) theory and techniques for condition monitoring of fixed plant equipment, including motors, pumps, gearboxes, and mechanical systems. 
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining program for magnetic plug inspection. 
  • Use generally recognized, advanced techniques for thermograph analysis, parameter identification, and fault diagnosis. 
  • Good understanding of additional NDT techniques: Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Visual and Optical Testing (VOT), and/or Electromagnetic Testing (ET). 
  • Possess a strong understanding of Tribological principles and establish standardized procedures for collecting and analyzing oil samples from fixed plant equipment to support predictive maintenance. 
  • Recommend corrective action and/or design modifications including component change or repair, isolation, damping, change of stiffness, and change of mass. 
  • Provide technical guidance to those new to the NDT field. 
  • Interpret and evaluate published ISO codes of practice and International Standards and specifications related to non-destructive testing. 
  • Participate in the application of reliability methodologies for supporting the continuous improvement of maintenance strategies (Reliability Centered Maintenance – RCM; Root Cause Analysis – RCA; Failure Modes Effect Criticality Analysis – FMECA; etc.). 
  • Work closely with the Reliability Engineer for improving inspection and NDT routes (scope and frequency) in order to maximize the reliability of equipment while optimizing the use of resources. 
  • Support the Planner in developing and/or updating maintenance plans. 
  • Research, analyze, and generate reports to communicate findings regarding equipment performance, with emphasis on early detection of potential failures in critical fixed plant systems. 
  • Assist with warranty claims due to faulty components for critical equipment. 
  • Fill in for the Reliability Engineer when required. 
  • Work with vendors on machine and component condition and repairs. 
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are required. 
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies. 
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management. 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state. 
  • Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them. 
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others. 
  • Perform other duties as required. 

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of Tribological principles, including lubrication management, oil sampling standards, and analysis for predictive maintenance of fixed plant equipment. 
  • Experience applying safety procedures when inspecting and maintaining fixed plant equipment such as electric motors, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, crushers, and hydraulic systems. 
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CMMS systems, with the ability to track, schedule, and optimize inspection activities and develop inspection templates. 
  • Ability to use or learn the use of JDE functionality for performing transactions related to work management. 
  • Ability to learn and apply relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC) in equipment inspection and acceptance testing. 
  • Good understanding of reliability methodologies for supporting the continuous improvement of maintenance strategies (RCM, RCA, FMECA, etc.) 
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets. 
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, problem solving and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. 
  • Demonstrates a proactive and innovative approach to leveraging existing technologies to improve maintenance practices 
  • Ability and willingness to train and mentor others in the application of maintenance and reliability technologies. 
  • Progression through wage scale is contingent upon satisfactory completion of attached checklists. 
  • Shift work, overtime, holidays and weekends (flexible work schedule to perform inspections) are required. 
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions required. 
  • Ability to work and lead others in a team environment.
