Job Summary

Responsible for supporting the geotechnical department through data collection, installation, and routine maintenance of the open pit hydrogeology and geotechnical instrumentation networks.  Coordination and field support for contract drilling activities as directed by the supervising Project Geologist.  To be familiar with and understand the principles of the environment policy and also to maintain and support procedures and work practices aimed at preventing accidents or injuries.

Essential Functions

  • Collection and processing of hydrogeological data from sources located both in and around the open pit.  This will involve both physical site visits in the field as well as remote access from the office.
  • Maintenance and periodic troubleshooting of the wireless Geokon network to ensure data collection is continual with minimal gaps or interruption to the network as a whole.
  • Install instrumentation into boreholes including Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWP) and Time Domain Reflectometers (TDR)
  • Collect data from boreholes through core logging activities.
  • Consolidate and validate collected borehole data from drilling activities.
  • Inspect and coordinate the construction of contract driller pads.
  • Be familiar with geotechnical monitoring equipment and reporting procedures and provide coverage/fill-in as needed by the department.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Some college coursework or a Bachelor of Science degree in geology or engineering disciplines is preferred.
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge and skill using a P.C. and utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends as scheduled or when required.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work alone or with others in a team environment.
  • Practical experience or general working knowledge of the mining processes and how to interact safely with heavy equipment is required.
  • Experience working with RC/Core drilling programs is preferred.
  • Experience working with Geokon sensing equipment is preferred.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Progression through wage scale is contingent upon satisfactory completion of attached checklists.
