Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Welder is responsible for maintaining and repairing a fleet of mining equipment, as well as performing structural welding and fabrication tasks as needed. While this role ideally suits an experienced mechanic with strong welding capabilities, we welcome applicants with significant experience in either field and a willingness to further develop both skill sets.

 

The position requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems, welding techniques, and safety practices while ensuring minimal downtime for equipment and compliance with Kinross' safety and operational standards.

 

Work Schedule
This position follows a rotating 5/4 schedule, alternating between day and night shifts. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed is required.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all MSHA and Bald Mountain safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mobile mining equipment, including haul trucks, graders, dozers, water trucks, shovels, and drills.
  • Conduct structural welding and fabrication on heavy equipment, including crack repair and metal buildup in line with OEM or AWS welding procedures.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to minimize downtime and support optimal equipment availability.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic issues.
  • Use welding and cutting equipment to fabricate or repair components.
  • Read and interpret technical schematics, repair manuals, and welding diagrams.
  • Create and maintain accurate work records, including work orders and turnover notes.
  • Must maintain a personal set of hand tools suitable for the role (up to ¾” drive); the company will provide specialized tools and equipment.
  • Support continuous improvement and site safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate with other maintenance personnel to ensure efficient and safe repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support maintenance operations and business needs.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance, welding, or a combination of both.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of diesel, hydraulic, and powertrain systems.
  • Welding experience required; formal certification preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely perform basic welding tasks using arc, MIG, TIG, and oxyacetylene techniques.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical and welding schematics.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate service trucks, forklifts, and other support equipment.
  • Must maintain a personal set of hand tools suitable for the role (up to ¾” drive); the company will provide specialized tools and equipment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and a commitment to safety.
  • Comfortable working outdoors and in varying environmental conditions.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and currently authorized to work full-time in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
