Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

Bald Mountain is an important contributor to the economy of northeastern Nevada and maintains a comprehensive environmental strategy including wildlife protection, habitat recovery and education.

Job Summary

Develop, compile and interpret geologic and related information which will assist in solving exploration and mining problems involving structure, rock types, alteration, ore grade, ore-waste boundaries, hydrology, and geotechnical parameters. Use information and interpretations to make mining and exploration operations more efficient and facilitate more effective evaluation of exploration targets. Plan, budget and execute exploration programs, supervise field crews, analyze and report results, manage project database, assist the geologist staff and Exploration Manager/Superintendent with other exploration tasks as required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Log and sample reverse circulation RC drill cuttings, blast holes, and diamond drill core.
  • Carry out and supervise geological and geochemical programs. Establish safety program and culture.
  • Compile geologic and assay data on plan maps, cross sections and in databases.
  • Prepare geological and mineral models.
  • Develop sound exploration programs based on observations and theory of mineral deposit formation. Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geochemical and geophysical data to identify exploration drill targets.
  • Prepare budget requests and assist in negotiating contracts for exploration activities. 
  • Ensure that geologic information is updated in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist other departments with tasks that involve geologic issues or that help expedite updating of geologic information. 
  • Keep current on new developments in geology and other fields that might improve efficiency in developing, handling and interpreting geologic data.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are required.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • BS in Geology is required and an MS degree or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience as a mine or exploration geologist is required.
  • A strong background in geologic models of ore systems and exploration techniques.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Good working knowledge and skills with a P.C. office applications and GIS software.
  • Have a strong commitment to safe working practices.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
