Tasiast Mine
The Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation in northwestern Mauritania located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored. The mine is proceeding with an expansion that is expected to increase production and lower operating costs. Tasiast is a cornerstone asset in Kinross’ portfolio, with a long mine life a large mineral reserve base.
As one of the largest private employers in Mauritania, Tasiast invests heavily in training and career development opportunities and has many important programs in place to support its host communities. For example, since 2014, Tasiast’s mobile clinic, which provides free medical support to isolated communities, has provided over 32,000 consultations.
Job Description
Reporting the MEM Manager, supports the execution of the strategy for maintenance and to ensure alignment with the organization’s overall strategy. As second in line to the MEM Manager to ensure continued growth of maintenance, to maximize operational efficiencies, safety, and profitability to cultivate exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction. Acting as the back up to the Manager assists to develop budget, forecasts, and strategic plans for the maintenance team. Establish controls to ensure the reporting of accurate cost and availability data.
Job Responsibilities
- Co-executes long-term operational strategies for the maintenance team
- Executes short and intermediate-term strategies that support the growth of maintenance; ensures strategies are concretely linked to the organization’s overall strategy
- Together with the MEM Manager sets priorities and allocates resources
- Assists in the management of the human, financial, and operational resources of maintenance
- Provides input to formulating the annual operating and capital budgets for maintenance
- Develops and implements business practices, processes, policies and systems within maintenance that align with the organization’s overall strategy and maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage
- Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone, and prioritizes business goals
- Co-leads and manages a team responsible for executing the maintenance strategy
- Works with the management to authorize major repairs or modifications and participates in the preparation of the annual maintenance budget
- Participates in setting performance targets and measurement, monitoring, and management of the overall performance of the function and direct reports
- Helps build the capabilities of the team to enhance maintenance’s ability to achieve financial and operating strategy; assist to identify succession role requirements and high potential talent, and actively develops key talent
- Management or oversight of such maintenance related functional activities as: job planning, scheduling, shift control, parts, materials, systems (i.e. data) management, performance monitoring (e.g. strategic direction, methodology selection, training, budgeting, and business process management), and liaisons with operations groups to ensure equipment/plant scheduled downtimes are coordinated effectively
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent tertiary qualification (diploma or degree) in a relevant discipline (mobile maintenance, mechanical engineering with extensive experience in Maintenance
- Electrical or Mechanical trade certificate equivalent with extensive international experience in Heavy Equipment Maintenance
- Minimum 8 years of international mining/dealer experience, with progressive leadership experience in operational / workshop roles
- Experience in West-Africa is a distinct advantage
- Knowledge and experience in developing policies and procedures relating to safety, the environment and individual, and organizational development
Skills
- Excellent understanding of heavy mining equipment
- Understanding of mining and maintenance operations and the asset management principles that underpin them
- Excellent understanding of contract maintenance, vendor, and contractor relationships and warranties
- Excellent analytical and computer skills.
- Ability to lead, maintain accountability and resolve conflict all while maintaining a positive working environment
- Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
- Must be able to perform well under extensive pressure and deliver results on schedule
- Have a strong commitment to safe working practices.
- Fluent English a must, French and or Arabic an advantage
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment
