Job Description

To provide comprehensive land management expertise and support to Kinross’ North American (principally U.S.) Land group and business region, serving the Land-related needs of Kinross’ legal group, mine sites, Exploration, Environmental, Reclamation, Community Relations and other functional groups. The Land group responsibilities include the acquisition and stewardship of all surface and mineral tenures and agreements required for minerals exploration, project development and mining operations, mine closures and reclamation; property rights administration, the sale, release and disposal of interests, and accurate reporting and management using GIS, Kinross systems and administrative tools.

Job Responsibilities

Provides land management expertise and support to achieve the objectives of Kinross Gold Corporation and the N. American Land group.  Implements best business practices in all areas of the Land group’s responsibilities and any related assignments. 

  • Assists in the ongoing development and implementation of management systems and processes for the company’s land management group, maximizing efficiency and in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.  
  • Supports the internal maintenance of all tenure and agreement rights and records and ensures the accuracy of the public record.
  • Develops detailed summaries of lease and option agreements, joint ventures, confidentiality agreements, etc. for posting in the company record.
  • Provides leadership and support for the continual development, maintenance and monitoring of internal records and obligations in the Kinross Land Management System (KLMS) to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Develops quality reference maps, manages and modifies existing maps of properties and project holdings and/or interests and supports new mapping initiatives using Esri ArcGIS mapping tools and software products.
  • Coordinates tenure-related activities with local, state, and federal agencies
  • Conducts surface and mineral title examinations and prepares internal reports based on the public records. Provides recommendations for acquisition and property asset management based on the results of title research.
  • Identifies the need for and recommends areas for improving systems, standards and procedures, and ensures compliance with regulations and professional practices.
  • Secures land tenure and associated permissions and conditions by negotiation and liaising with landowners, relevant authorities, residents and representative bodies
  • Assists with property acquisitions and dispositions, including evaluation of land title status, agreement negotiations, claim staking and site mapping
  • Assists the Land Manager and the General Counsel - North America, with due diligence requirements on various initiatives 
  • Develops and manages budgets for the land management function
  • Participates in audits of KLMS and business procedures to ensure best practices are maintained
  • Prepares business cases and reports regarding land management initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
  • Provides expertise and support for environmental management, regulatory compliance, permit assessment and permit acquisition

To advise the management group on land management activities

  • Reports directly to the Land Manager, North America.
  • Works closely with Kinross exploration group and mine managers as directed, to achieve best results.
  • Interfaces regularly with senior management and other departments (legal, operations, project managers, human resources, accounting and information systems) to ensure effective identification of land management issues that might impact the Company’s business results.
  • Reviews best practices and the competitive landscape and recommends continuous improvement efforts in land management
  • Influences leaders and key stakeholders to buy into change efforts that will result in sustained competitive advantage

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Hands on experience performing patent to present title
  • One to three (3) years of land management related experience in the natural resources industry.
  • One to three (3) years of experience using and performing ArcGIS mapping tools in the natural resources field.
  • One to three (3) years of experience performing mineral title work in the natural resources field.
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis
