Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near Fairbanks, Alaska in one of the largest gold producing areas of the state. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. Fort Knox has one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world.

Job Description

Basic responsibilities include developing budgets, forecasts, and strategic plans for the mine.  The Site Controller will establish controls to ensure the reporting of accurate cost data as well as manage the Accounting, Information Technology, Warehouse, and Procurement departments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the Accounting and Information Technology with the possibility of expanded responsibilities/departments depending on the candidate
  • Provide direction and leadership for the Chief Accountant, Senior Accountant, Payroll Coordinator, Technical Support Specialist, Accounts Payable Clerk, and the Materials Manager. Participate in developing department goals and objectives.
  • Maintain control over the information system and its integrity.
  • Develop and recommend annual budget and compare performance with operating plans and standards.
  • Oversee the short-range and long-range cost forecasts and operating plans, provide departmental financial updates, and make financial recommendations.
  • Actively participate as a member of senior management to establish and manage general operating parameters.
  • Supervise accounting systems with established accounting practices and procedures including periodic audits.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reports as required by management.
  • Review month-end financial statements and results and report to management.
  • Assist department heads in monitoring and controlling individual departmental costs.
  • Maintain control over fixed assets and capture tax depreciation.
  • Assure timely, economical purchase of raw materials, parts, equipment, and operating supplies.
  • Assure protection for the assets of the business through internal control, internal auditing, and ensuring proper insurance coverage.
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed.
  • Review documentation of accidents, injuries, and equipment damage and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
  • Work safely in all areas, identify potential safety hazards, and work with management to correct them.
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • 8-10 years work experience is required, preferably in the mining industry.
  • Required background to include extensive experience with budgeting and forecasting, materials management, warehousing, and procurement; exposure to on-site computer software is a plus.
  • Strong technical accounting abilities are essential.
  • General understanding of system integrations.
  • Mine start up, expansion, and/or closure experience desired.


  • Knowledge of accounting and applicable flow to general ledger of both income statement and balance sheet.
  • Strong working knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Has demonstrated strong supervisory skills in managing personnel in varying and unrelated fields.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the physical demands sheets.
  • May work holidays, weekends, and shift work as required.

Reporting Relationships

• Directly reports to the VP & GM.
• Works closely with the corporate finance group.
