Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base located in Nevada. It is the newest mine in Kinross’ portfolio and was acquired in January 2016.

Job Summary

Position reports to the Sr Exploration Manager, Bald Mountain and is based in Elko, Nevada.

This position is focused on the discovery of new potential resources throughout the greater Bald Mountain property by developing and testing Generative Exploration targets and advancing them through the exploration pipeline.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing a group of generative field geologists and contractors including the required administrative functions, advise and cooperate with all other mine and exploration departments and assist in overall exploration management as related to the generative programs.  The successful leader will work in a manner that promotes achieving safety and production goals, while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.

Essential Functions

  1. Initiate, budget for and justify exploration expenditures.
  2. Lead Exploration in a manner that would promote achieving safety and production goals.
  3. Estimated travel based on current job requirements is (15%).
  4. Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability.
  5. Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
  6. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  7. Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
  8. Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  9. Works without risk or harm to self and others.
  10. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by state agency, or must be able to pass driver competency course and exam.
  11. Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  12. Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  1.  Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or equivalent required. A Masters with economic geology emphasis is preferred.
  2. A minimum of 15 years of experience as an exploration geologist with increasing levels of responsibility is preferred.
  3. Knowledge of exploration techniques as they apply to mineral deposit discovery and evaluation.
  4. Advanced knowledge of mineral deposits and the integration of exploration methods in the discovery and mineral deposit evaluation process in Northern Nevada and North America preferred.
  5. Demonstrated success in value-added technical and economic assessment of early- to advanced-stage exploration targets in brownfields environments.
  6. Experience in identifying opportunities, securing new projects, negotiating agreements, and designing and implementing exploration programs.
  7. General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations.
  8. Have a realistic approach to economic targets using economic models in exploration
  9. A successful track record in creative thinking, leading to the development of robust exploration targets
  10. Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
  11. Experience with technical softwares common in the industry; ArcGIS, Leapfrog, Vulcan, ioGAS etc.
  12. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  13. Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  14. Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
  15. Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
