The Manh Choh Project is a greenfield gold deposit in eastern Alaska being developed with ore being hauled to Kinross’ Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks for processing. The mine site is located in the Tetlin Hills, approximately 250 miles southeast of Fort Knox and 10 miles southeast of Tok. Production is expected to begin in 2024.

Job Summary

Responsible for the safe and efficient day-to-day operations of the sample preparation lab, water collection and treatment system (WMS), as well as other site support functions such as snow removal. Follow established policies, practices, and procedures when providing technical support and work direction to the support services team and assay lab team. Guide employees in the performance of their tasks and develop employees to perform all the duties essential to the areas of responsibility.

Job Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise lab and WMS activities including defining and delegating work assignments to ensure safe, productive, and efficient operation to meet laboratory and mine water management goals.
  • Ensures that prescribed protocols for sample preparation, LECO and XRF analyses are followed.
  • Ensures that prescribed protocols for operating and a maintainance of the WMS are followed.
  • Oversee daily production and delivery of analytical results to the mine and geology departments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide thorough orientation, training and follow up to new lab employees, while ensuring skills are maintained and upgraded as needed to all lab employees. Address questions and resolve issues while ensuring standards are met.
  • Supervise and participate in daily production assays, preparation of standardized solutions for calibration purposes, and analyze assay results. Report and follow up on discrepancies.
  • Monitor and manage water inventories in the WMS, report and follow up on discrepancies.
  • Work with business partners and contractors to complete project work as required.
  • Comply with established methodologies and quality standards related to the assay lab.
  • Review, adapt and develop analytical procedures in order to remain current with changing technology and industry practice.
  • Comply with established SPCC permit and quality standards related to the Storm Water permit.
  • Ensure operating supply stock is available and requisition materials, supplies, and equipment for routine and project activities as needed.
  • Ensure that all lab and WMS equipment is maintained in good condition and initiate work orders as required.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Prepare, maintain and present reports for the laboratory and WMS in daily and weekly meetings. Maintain accurate reports of analytical determinations performed and results obtained.
  • Escalate, as appropriate, issues requiring knowledge about the broader business impact of decisions.
  • Prepare communication materials, manuals, and other written materials related to the prep. lab and WMS. 
  • Adhere to all safety and environmental procedures and regulations. Wear personal protective equipment at all times while in the production environment. Be alert and observe, report and correct unsafe conditions.
  • Perform administrative duties such as time entry, report generation and crew scheduling including leave time. Record and maintain overtime, vacation, and PLP records.
  • Work with peers to develop policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Responsible for documenting work performance, conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed.
  • Report, investigate, analyze, and supervise the documentation of accidents, injuries and equipment damage, and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
  • Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience

Education
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.  Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.

Experience

  • Two years supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of prep lab operations is preferred.
  • Good working knowledge and skills with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Knowledge of operation of a LECO and XRF analyzer is preferred.
  • Basic understanding the operation of mine pumping systems and water treatment plants.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Basic technical ability to troubleshoot lab and WMS equipment (crushers, pulverizers, furnace, baghouse, hot plates, dewatering pumps, piping and pipe repairs and basic generator issues). 
  • Work ethic that demonstrates by example, how to achieve production goals.
  • Must have solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Must be available for flexible work schedules, including holidays and weekends.
